STANFORD, Calif. - The 19th-ranked San Diego State men's golf team didn't play its best during Saturday's opening two rounds of the 2002 US Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course. But the Aztecs are still within striking distance as the 17-team field heads into Sunday's third and final round.

None of the five Aztecs were able to break par in either round, however junior John Lieber and sophomore Mark Warman came close. The duo each finished up at 3-over par 143 as SDSU carded team total of 15-over 583, good for sixth place.

No. 9 USC, the highest ranked team in the tournament, had two players wrap up play among the top-5 individuals and was the only team to finish below par, shooting a 3-under 565 to claim the tournament lead through 36 holes. Host team Stanford is second at 572, with UCLA and Oregon tied for third at 578.

"We played just average today, which is frustrating because this team has the potential to be so much more," said SDSU head coach Dale Walker. "But we are still in the hunt and in a good position for another win if we can get things cranked up tomorrow."

Seniors Scott Henderson and Brandon Kearney each fired 5-over 147 and are tied for 30th, while junior Lars Johansson is tied for 36th at 6-over 148.

The third and final round of the 2002 US Intercollegiate tees off from the Stanford Golf Course Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
