SDSU Prepares For Final Road Trip Of Regular Season

The San Diego State softball team will make the short trip up the I-8 on Wednesday to face the University of San Diego Toreros in a doubleheader. Games are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the USD Softball Field.

The Aztecs will return to Mountain West action when they play Brigham Young and Utah this weekend in Utah. The doubleheader with BYU is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., at Gale Miller Field in Provo, Utah. From there, the team will take a short trip to Salt Lake City to face the Utes in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon at Ute Field.

The road trip is the last of the regular season for State which will host Colorado State, New Mexico and UNLV in the coming weeks. The Aztecs will travel back to Provo for the Mountain West Conference Softball Championship hosted by BYU, May 9-11.

Last Week
The Aztecs held tight to their one-game lead in the Mountain West, splitting with New Mexico and sweeping at Colorado State last weekend. The team started in Albuquerque with a 7-6 loss in game one, but exploded at the plate in the second game with a 10-4 romp over the Lobos. State fared better in Fort Collins, Colo., with a sweep over the Rams, 3-1 and 4-1.
*For the first time in 2002, the Aztecs were out hit by Mountain West opponents at both New Mexico and Colorado State, 10-5 and 12-6, respectively. SDSU tied a school record with a team-high 16 hits against New Mexico in game two.
* The 10 runs scored by State in New Mexico were the most for the team this season. The last time an SDSU team scored 10 runs was against Michigan State in 2001.
* Three Aztecs hit home runs this weekend including the first for senior Summer Ehrsam this season. Tiffany Goudy and Janna Kovensky each hit their second home runs of the season against Colorado State.
* Bre DeSanta pitched two complete games and earned her sixth save of the season in the 4-1 win over the Rams. Overall, she gave up three runs in 16 innings of work and struck out 10 batters.

About San Diego
* San Diego is 11-31 during the 2002 season and has already lost twice this year to the Aztecs.
* The Toreros are led at the plate by Kirsten Adair with a .294 batting average (20-66).
* Anna Russell and Allison Williams lead USD in the circle with 3.96 and 4.95 ERAs, respectively.

About BYU
* The Cougars are 26-18 overall and 3-7 in the Mountain West. The Aztecs swept the Cougars in San Diego earlier this season.
* Oli Keohohou leads BYU at the plate with a .442 batting average and leads the conference with 16 home runs.
* Time in the circle is split between Ariel Capra with a 4.21 ERA and Cynthia Fallowfield with a 4.21 ERA.

About Utah
* Utah has made a push in the Mountain West and is one game behind the Aztecs with a 7-3 conference and 19-31 overall record.
* The Aztecs and the Utes split in San Diego earlier this season. SDSU took the first game 9-1, but lost the second game 4-2.
* Molly McLean has started every game for the Utes and leads the team with a .344 batting aveage (56-163) with 10 doubles, and four home runs.
* Pitching has been split between Heather Bowlin with a 2.82 ERA and Jennifer Pursell with a 3.19 ERA.

Now Entering The Mountain West
The Aztecs are 8-2 and seem to be on a bit of a roll through the league. The Mountain West has been very good to the Aztecs.
* SDSU entered Mountain West play in 2001 with a 23-13 record and made its way to the first-ever NCAA appearance by an Aztec team.
* State finished last season with a 10-8 record in the conference and played in the final game of the MWC Tournament.

Stop Thief!
Three Aztecs are sneaking their way into the career record books for stolen bases.
* Senior Sarah Hershman has moved into second place above Erryn Gutjahr with 44.
* Sophomore Janna Kovensky has added 16 to her freshman total of nine. With an average of one base per game, Kovensky will find her way onto the career list by the end of the season.
* Kellie Nordhagen is now tied for fifth on the Aztecs' career stolen-bases list. Her name appears on all but three top-five lists.

Leading Off
Senior outfielder Kellie Nordhagen is right at home leading off in the order, she has a .305 (50-164) clip from the top spot. She is hitting .351 in conference play.

Top-Ranked Troubles
The Aztecs have had a hard time beating teams in the top 25 this season, the most recent loss being to No. 7 Cal State Fullerton. The Titans won 9-0 and 2-1.
* SDSU has beaten No. 11 Oregon State and No. 20 Texas A&M, but have fallen to No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 California, No. 9 Washington and No. 16 Fresno State.

Bre DeSanta Earns MWC Honors
San Diego State freshman righthander Bre DeSanta was named Mountain West Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week (April 16). The honor is her fourth of the season and the seventh for the San Diego State softball team.
* DeSanta appeared in three games for the Aztecs last week, registering a 2-0 record (both complete games) and a save.
* In 16.0 innings of work, she gave up 19 hits, five runs (three earned) and struck out 10 while walking none. In game two against New Mexico, she gave up 10 hits and two earned runs, helping the Aztecs to a 10-4 win.
* DeSanta's best performance of the week came in San Diego State's, 3-1, win over Colorado State in game one of its doubleheader. The Scottsdale, Ariz., product scattered five hits, struck out six and gave up a run in the SDSU victory.
* She capped the week pitching two innings of relief in game two against the Rams, to preserve the Aztecs' 4-1 win.
* DeSanta currently leads the MWC in ERA (1.11), opposing batting average (.210), wins (12), saves (6,4th in the nation), appearances (37), games finished (20) and games finished in relief (20). This is her fourth pitcher of the week award this season.

Atop The Mountain
San Diego State has a good view from the top of the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs not only lead the conference in standings, but also top the charts in several offensive and defensive categories.
* Senior outfielder Tiffany Goudy leads the Mountain West in hits with 57.
* Freshman pitcher Bre DeSanta leads the conference in ERA (1.11), strikeouts (119), appearances (37) and opposing batting average (.210).
* The Aztecs' pitching staff's 1.87 ERA leads the MWC.
* State leads the conference in doubles (50), sac bunts (69), triples (13) and stolen bases (68).

Watch For Streakers
* Joann Figueroa and Tiffany Goudy are both on six-game hitting streaks.
* Sarah Hershman is on a four-game streak and has already had a seven-game hitting streak this season. The senior had two eight-game hitting streaks last season.
* Janna Kovensky had a seven-game hitting streak this season. She also had a seven-gamer last season. She just wrapped up another five-gamer.
* Kellie Nordhagen just wrapped up a four-game hitting streak. She has already had a seven-gamer this season.

One Is The Loneliest Number
Several Aztecs have had multiple-hit and multiple-RBI games this season.
* Leading the pack in both categories is senior Tiffany Goudy. She has had nine multiple-RBI and 19 multiple-hit games.
* Kellie Nordhagen has 15 multiple-hit games followed by Sarah Hershman with 12.
* All-in-all, nine Aztecs have atleast one multipile-hit game and eight have had multiple-RBI games.

Sophomore Standouts
Last year's phenom freshmen have matured into this year's superb sophs.
* Janna Kovensky has 42 hits, two triples and two home runs. She has scored 28 runs and stolen a team-high 16 bases.
* Joann Figueroa returns at shortstop with a .287 batting average and has seven stolen bases.
* Kelcy Murphy hit a single, double and triple against New Mexico and leads the Aztecs with three home runs. She has totaled 21 RBI this season.

DeSanta In De Circle
Bre DeSanta has quickly emerged as the Aztecs' ace in the circle.
* The freshman leads the staff with a 1.11 ERA and has struck out a team-high 119 batters.
* She also leads the team with 151.2 innings pitched and has been recognized as Mountain West Pitcher of the Week four times.

Two Words...Tiffany Goudy
Tiffany Goudy is making the most of her senior season.
* The outfielder is the only member of the Aztec team who has yet to commit an error this season. She hasn't committed an error since her sophomore season.
* She leads the Aztecs at the plate with a .365 batting average and a team-high 57 hits and 30 RBI.
* Goudy, a former Colorado State player, hit her second home run against the Rams last weekend.
