FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The San Diego State softball team held tight to its position at the top of the Mountain West Conference with a doubleheader sweep of the Colorado State Rams, 3-1, 4-1 at Ram Field in Fort Collins, Colorado today. The win brings the Aztec record to 31-19-1 and 8-2 in conference.
SDSU was the first on the board in game one, when senopr Sarah Hershman reached first on a fielder's choice sending fellow senior Kellie Nordhagen in for the run. The Aztecs scored again in the top of the third frame Hershman singled up the middle, earning her second RBI of the game while Janna Kovensky scored.
Colorado State answered with a run in the fourth Jennifer Mahoney reached on a fielder's choice and Lindsay Haun scored. That would be the only time that the Rams scored in the first game.
The Aztecs scored the final run when Hershman got on base with a triple to center field and third baseman Kelcy Murphy brought her home on a single up the middle.
Bre DeSanta pitched a complete game in the circle giving up one run off of five hits and striking out six batters. The win brings her record to 12-8 on the year.
Game two started with Colorado State taking the lead in the first when Ricki Walker grounded out to shortstop Joann Figueroa, sending Steph Roberts in for the score. Both teams kept the bats fairly quiet until the sixth when the Aztecs scored three runs off of four hits.
Two runs in the sixth were scored when Tiffany Goudy, who spent her freshman year as a CSU Ram, jacked a two-run home run over the left field fence. The home run brought Goudy and Kovensky, who reached on a single, home. Freshman Danielle Touhey singled up the middle, sending Hershman home for the final run of the sixth.
The final run of the game was a home run to left field by Kovensky in the seventh frame.
Goudy wrapped up the her last appearance at Ram Field going 3-for-8 that included a homerun with two RBI and one run. Hershman was productive at the plate going 3-for-5 with triple and two runs and two RBI. The Aztecs outhit the Rams 10-5 in the first game, but saw a reversal of roles when Colorado State doubled up 12-6 in the second game.
The Aztecs will take a short break before facing crss-town rival San Diego on Wednesday. From there, the team travels to Utah for its final road trip before the conference tournament to face BYU and Utah.
