San Diego State Men's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight, With 7-0 Win Over Pacific

April 14, 2002

SAN DIEGO - The 32nd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team claimed its third victory in as many days with a 7-0 shutout over Pacific on Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Courts.

The Aztecs, which claimed the Mountain West Conference regular-season title on Saturday in Salt Lake City, returned home and completed a 15-8 regular-season mark with the victory. The Tigers fall to 11-6 overall.

"I wanted to test us by playing three games in three days," SDSU coach John Nelson said. "Everyone showed great mental energy in being able to win the conference title yesterday, get on a plane last night and play today. Now we will take a couple day off and get ready for the conference tournament."

The Aztecs cruised to the victory, winning all three doubles matches and losing just one set in sweeping six singles matches.

The nation's third-ranked doubles team of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo won 8-5 over Pacific's Junaid Hossain and Niclas Otte at number one doubles. But the Aztecs had already clinched the doubles point with Travis Hasson and Gabe Coren posting an 8-1 win at number three and Felix Hardt and Valentino Pest claiming an 8-4 win at number two.

San Diego State coasted in five of the six singles matches. At number two, Pest was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Hossain, while at number five Redondo won 6-3, 6-1 against Gernot Kershbaumer. The Aztecs clinched the match when 19th-ranked Maiberger posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory versus Dietrich Haug at number one singles.

At number six singles, Coren was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Fredrik Jeppsson, while at number three Felix Hardt needed a first-set tiebreaker to get by Otte, 7-6, 6-2.

In the only three set match of the afternoon, SDSU's Hasson rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Maxime Lacroix, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.

The Aztecs will take the next couple of days off before preparing for the Mountain West Conference Tournament, to be held April 25-27 in Las Vegas.
