April 14, 2002

Box Score

San Diego - San Diego State completed a three-game sweep of UNLV with a 6-4 win over the Rebels Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Aztecs, their longest win streak of the season and best since the 1997 campaign when they won 12 consecutive contests.

SDSU improved its overall record to 29-12 and 11-3 in the Mountain West Conference as it maintains its hold on first place in the league by two games over Brigham Young, its next conference opponent. UNLV saw its record drop to 17-21 and 5-10 in conference play.

San Diego State took the lead in the second on an RBI single by left fielder Josh Hill that brought home Chad Corona from third. They added two more in the next inning, complements of run-scoring singles by Jake McLintock and Taber Lee.

The Aztecs upped their lead to 5-0 in the fourth with two-out back-to-back solo home runs by McLintock and Corona. McLintock finished the day with a single, triple and homer with two RBI while Corona had a pair of hits and two runs batted in. Between the two of them, they scored five of SDSU's six runs on the day.

Aztec starter Joe Carque sailed through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing four runs on four hits as the Rebels drew to within a run at 5-4. The junior from Henderson, Nev., finished the inning, but was lifted with two outs in the sixth for reliever Erik Fiedler. Carque went on to get the win to improve his record to 5-1. Royce Ring came on in the ninth and recorded his 11th save of the year.

SDSU added their insurance run in the seventh when McLintock led off the inning with a triple and came home on a single by Corona.

The Aztecs take a short break from Mountain West play as they travel north to face Cal State Northridge at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday (April 16). They return home on Thursday to start a three-game series with Brigham Young at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Prior to that first game on Thursday, the SDSU and BYU will complete the game that was suspended on March 23 in Provo in the top of the ninth inning with SDSU leading 11-10.
