SAN DIEGO - The 22nd-ranked San Diego State women's tennis teams defeated 72nd-ranked Loyola Marymount, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the SDSU Courts.
It was the 10th victory in the last 11 matches for the Aztecs, who improved to 15-7 overall. The Lions, who currently lead the West Coast Conference, fall to 11-9 overall.
"This was a really solid effort against a ranked regional opponent," SDSU head coach Peter Mattera said. "This continues the momentum we had after completing an undefeated conference season."
San Diego State claimed the doubles point by winning at number two and three doubles. Indra Erichsen and Silvia Tornier posted an 8-1 victory at number two and Lindsey Hedberg and Julie Anna Chidley were victorious by an 8-4 score at number three.
The Aztecs won five of the six singles matches including four in straight sets. Katey Clark-Becker gave San Diego State its second team point with a 6-1, 6-2 win at number five singles. The Aztecs increased the lead to 3-0 when Hedberg defeated Penka Fileva, 6-2, 6-0 at number two.
San Diego State clinched the match when sophomore Katalina Romero celebrated her 21st birthday in style, winning at number four singles, by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
After the Lions recorded a win at number three singles, the Aztecs rounded out the team scoring with 79th-ranked Silvia Tornier winning at number one singles and Chidley winning in three-sets at number six singles.
The Aztecs conclude the regular-season portion of their schedule on Tuesday when San Diego State plays host to San Diego. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at the SDSU Courts.
