SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football team went through its second major scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning and the results were positive, according to Aztec coaches.

"I think we have to be pleased," said head coach Tom Craft, who is overseeing his first spring as San Diego State's head coach. "I saw some good things on defense and the offense is making progress. It wasn't sloppy and that was encouraging."

Most of the scrimmage was situational with San Diego State spending time on its goal-line offense and moving out from its own three. A majority of the second half of the workout began with an offensive possession 40 yards from the goal.

"We worked on a lot of different things, including personnel groups and special situations and we got some things done," Craft added.

One of San Diego State's primary goals of the spring was to find a replacement for departed All-America running back Larry Ned and Craft is feeling comfortable in that area.

"We have a lot of depth there, but James Truvillion, DeAngelo Nedd and Michael Franklin are starting to separate themselves," Craft said.

Nedd, who moved to the offensive side of the ball from safety after Craft took the reins of the program, had nine carries for 115 yards, including rushes of 58 and 40 yards.

Michael Franklin, a redshirt freshman from New Orleans, averaged 5.1 yards on 10 carries and had a 15-yard reception as he put the wraps on his second straight strong scrimmage.

SDSU will complete spring drills with a scrimmage on Friday at the SDSU practice facility.
