SAN DIEGO - The 32nd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team claimed its third-straight victory with a 7-0 shutout of Utah on Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City.
The Aztecs dominated play, claiming the doubles point and winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
The lone setback for the Aztecs came at number one doubles, where third-ranked Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo were upset by David Mercier and Nicholas Yip of Utah, 9-8. The Aztecs still claimed the doubles point by virtue of victories in number two doubles by Felix Hardt and Valentino Pest, and at number three doubles by Travis Hasson and Gabe Coren.
Both Maiberger and Redondo bounced back for victories in singles play. At number one singles, 19th-ranked Maiberger claimed his third-straight victory since returning from an injury with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Corrie Sheepers. Redondo was victorious at number five singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniel Lohff.
The middle of the Aztec lineup was solid as Pest won 6-3, 6-3 at number two singles and Hardt was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at number three singles. Hasson defeated Tyler Poulson 6-3, 6-2 and Coren got pass Tobias Tangberg at number six singles, 6-4, 6-1.
San Diego State is 13-8 overall and 3-1 in Mountain West Conference play, while Utah fell to 12-10 and 1-3. The Aztecs are back in action Saturday morning as San Diego State will play Brigham Young in Salt Lake City.
