SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis program clinched its second regular-season Mountain West Conference championship in three years with a 7-0 victory over New Mexico on Saturday morning in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Aztecs won all three doubles matches and lost just two sets in sweeping six singles matches. San Diego State has now won 12 consecutive league matches dating back to last season.
Aztec junior Silvia Tornier, ranked 79th nationally, improved to 14-6 during the dual season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number one singles over Tjasa Suvak. Junior Lindsey Hedberg was a winner at number two singles over New Mexico's Sandy Lukowski, 6-3, 7-6.
San Diego State players Katalina Romero and Indra Erichson were both pushed to three sets prior to recording victories at number three and four singles, respectively.
With three victories in doubles play, the Aztecs have now won 22 of their last 24 doubles dual matches.
With the victory, San Diego State improves to 13-7 overall and 6-0 in Mountain West Conference play while New Mexico falls to 10-8 and 3-1 in league action. The Aztecs will attempt to complete an undefeated conference campaign tomorrow when they play at Air Force. Match time is set for 9 a.m. MST at the Air Force Academy.
