SDSU Women's Tennis Team Moves Into Top 25

April 3, 2002

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team achieved its highest ranking in more than a year on Wednesday when the Aztecs climbed to No. 22 in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Wednesday.

The Aztec women, 12-6 overall and 5-0 in Mountain West Conference play, have won seven straight matches entering Wednesday's match at 42nd-ranked Pepperdine. Included in the winning streak are victories over four ranked teams, including 15th-ranked UNLV and 18th-ranked Notre Dame.

The San Diego State women's team, which has won 10 consecutive regular-season Mountain West Conference matches dating back to last season, needs to win one of its final two conference games to earn its second MWC title in the three-year existence of the league.

Women's individual and doubles rankings are expected to be released tomorrow.

The San Diego State men's tennis team, which has been playing without junior All-America candidate Oliver Maiberger the last five matches, dropped to No. 32 in the ITA rankings.

The Aztec men, 10-8 overall and 2-1 in Mountain West Conference play, are 3-2 since Maiberger left the lineup due to a viral infection. San Diego State reached a season-high ranking of 25 two weeks ago, and was 30th last week.

Although Maiberger has not played since March 16th, the junior moved up in the singles rankings released Wednesday. Maiberger is ranked 19th nationally, up two positions from the previous poll released on March 20th. The doubles rankings, which Maiberger and teammate Ryan Redondo were ranked third nationally in the March 20th poll, will be released tomorrow.

The men will be in action on Friday when they play host to 35th-ranked Tulsa. Match time at the SDSU Courts is set for 1:30 p.m.
