SDSU Swimmer Sets NCAA Mark At Final Day Of MWC Championships

March 3, 2002

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - San Diego State senior Meghan Casillan set an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 200-yard backstroke and senior Heather DeFelice set a school record in the 100 freestyle on Saturday in the final day of competition in the 2002 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The event was held at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatics Center.

Casillan's NCAA mark of 2:01.58 came in the finals heat of the 200 back and earned her fourth-place in the event. The time was also the fastest by an Aztec in the event this season.

The other highlight of the day came by DeFelice who's school record in the 100 free came by way of her lead off split time of 52.10 in the 400 freestyle relay. The Aztec quartet of DeFelice, Hannah Ryan, Tara Johnson and Erin Kilpatrick posted a season-best, eighth-place time of 3:32.13 in the 400 free relay.

DeFelice's mark in the 200 free surpassed the record of 52.20 set by Barbi Blalock during the 1978-19 season.

Erin Kilpatrick earned her second bronze medal in as many days, placing third in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 2:05.49. Senior Tara Johnson placed eighth (2:06.99) in the 200 fly.

Senior Heather DeFelice placed sixth (2:20.09) in the finals of the 200 breaststroke after posting a season-best time of 2:19.01 in the prelims.

Casillan is the second SDSU swimmer to set an NCAA provisional mark at this year's conference championships, with sophomore Aletta Haff doing so in the 100 backstroke on Friday.

Kilpatrick is the only Aztec to medal in this year's league meet. Along with Saturday's third-place victory in the 200 fly, she placed third in Friday's 400 individual medley.

SDSU finished in seventh place in team scoring with 362 points. Brigham Young captured its third straight MWC championship, scoring 601 points. UNLV (575) and Colorado State (565) rounded out the top three.
