Aztec Women's Tennis Wins Sixth Straight, Crushes Wyoming 6-1

March 29, 2002

SAN DIEGO - One day after upsetting 15th-ranked UNLV, 29th-ranked San Diego State ran its winning streak to six consecutive matches with a 6-1 victory over Wyoming at the SDSU Courts.

The Aztecs swept the three doubles matches and lost no sets and just 13 games in their five singles wins. With the victory, the Aztecs improve to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in Mountain West Conference play. Wyoming fell to 5-8 overall and 0-1 in league play.

"I am proud of my team for coming out after beating the 15th-ranked team in the country and not suffering a letdown," San Diego State coach Peter Mattera said. "We came out and took care of business."

The Aztecs cruised to the doubles point getting 8-2 victories from Katalina Romero and Katja Karrento at number one doubles and Lindsey Hedberg and Julie Anna Chidley at number three doubles. San Diego State completed a doubles sweep with Silvia Tornier and Indra Erichsen rallying from a 3-0 deficit to win 8-5 at number two doubles.

With the exception of the Cowgirls victory at number one singles, the Aztecs dominated singles play, winning the five singles matches in straight sets and not losing more than four games in any one match.

The Aztecs went up 2-0 when Katey Clark-Becker posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Toni Terhaar at number five singles. Julie Anna Chidley added to the Aztec advantage with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kati Gyulai at number six singles. San Diego State sealed the match with a win at number two singles from Lindsey Hedberg. The Junior posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wyoming's Yuliani Santi to give the Aztecs their 10th consecutive victory in a Mountain West Conference regular-season match.

San Diego State added to the final margin with wins at number four and three singles. The Aztecs' Indra Erichsen defeated Paulina del Monte at number four singles, 6-3, 6-1 and Katja Karrento got past Jennifer Hancock, 6-2, 6-2.

Wyoming's lone team point came when Jenny Bowman snapped the Aztecs' Silvia Tornier's win streak at five matches, winning 6-2, 7-6.

The Aztecs are back in action tomorrow at SDSU Courts when San Diego State battles Colorado State. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
