Men's Golf In Seventh After Two Rounds Of Oregon Duck Invitational

March 25, 2002

JUNCTION CITY, Ore. - The 16th-ranked San Diego State men's golf team will have to make up some ground if its going to win its fourth-straight spring tournament.

The Aztecs, undefeated in 2002 and winners of three consecutive events, carded a combined 1-under par total of 575 during the opening 36 holes of the Oregon Duck Invitational Monday at the Shadow Hills Country Club and head into Tuesday's third and final round in seventh place.

"We've won the last three tournament's wire-to-wire," said SDSU head coach Dale Walker. "Now we are going to see if we can win one on the final day. The good news is that if we play up to our ability we have the talent to do it."

SDSU, however, will have to overtake six teams over the final 18 holes, including host school Oregon, which sits atop the team leaderboard at 9-under 567.

Brandon Kearney turned in the Aztecs' low score of the day, firing a 4-under 140 during the opening two rounds and finishing tied for fifth. Unfortunately for San Diego State, the senior is playing the tournament as an individual and his score does not count toward SDSU's team total.

The Aztecs' low score was posted by junior Lars Johansson, who carded a 2-under 142 and stands tied for ninth. Senior Scott Henderson shot even-par 144 and junior Chris Galeski carded a 1-over 145 and also finish in the top 25, tying for 21st and 23rd, respectively.

SDSU's top golfers on the year, junior John Lieber and sophomore Mark Warman, both shot 3-over 147 and are tied for 34th.

The third and final round of the Oregon Duck Invitational tees off Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
