Provo, Utah - San Diego State scored six times in the top of the eighth inning to take an 11-10 lead over Brigham Young in a contest that was suspended by prior agreement due to the Aztecs' travel itinerary.
Because of an early evening flight out of Salt Lake City, no inning was to start after 4:15 p.m., and the eighth inning ended at 4:25. The game will be completed prior to the first game of the Aztec-Cougar series to be played in San Diego on April 18. SDSU's record remains 20-9 (4-1 MWC) while the Cougars are 9-14-1 (3-2) on the season.
SDSU trailed 10-5 before mounting their go-ahead rally in the top of the eighth, scoring six times on seven hits and a BYU error to take the lead. With one out, Josh Allen and Landon Burt singled to put runners on first and third. James Ray then came on in relief for the Cougars and promptly balked Burt to second as Allen scored.
Anthony Gwynn then reached on the error by second baseman Rob Itri allowing Burt to score. A Taber Lee single was followed by a double steal, and Carlo Cota then doubled to left to drive in Gwynn and Lee. A single by Garrett Cook set up an RBI opportunity for Jon Stephens who responded with a single to bring home Cota and tie the contest. Brian Manfred's two-out base hit scored Cook to give SDSU the lead.
Brigham Young threatened in the bottom of the inning, but Royce Ring came on to get the third out with runners on second and third.
Shortstop Taber Lee continued to be red hot at the plate, going 4-for-4 and scoring a pair of runs. Cota finished the game with a pair of hits including a double and three RBI while Gwynn also had two hits, a double, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
Reliever Joe Carque is the pitcher of record for the Aztecs, pitching four innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. Ray stands to take the decision for Brigham Young after giving up four of the five runs in his two-thirds inning of work.
The Aztecs now return home to Tony Gwynn Stadium to take on Cal State Northridge in a non-league contest on Tuesday (March 26) at 6:00 p.m. They then hit the road again for a three-game Mountain West series at Utah next weekend.
The Northridge game can be heard live on the Internet beginning at 5:50 p.m. (PST) with Alan Horton calling the action.
