Aztec Women's Tennis Knocks off Defending MWC Champs

March 23, 2002

SAN DIEGO - The 39th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team defeated 31st-ranked and defending Mountain West Conference champion Brigham Young, 5-2, on Saturday morning in Las Vegas.

It was the fourth straight victory for the Aztecs which improved to 9-6 on the season and 2-0 in league play. San Diego State, which now has won eight consecutive Mountain West Conference regular-season matches dating back to last season, was able to exact some revenge on the Cougars for a 4-3 loss in the title match of last season's conference tournament. The Cougars fell to 6-11 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

"This is a great start to our conference season," Aztec coach Peter Mattera said. "Our team showed a lot of composure playing through windy conditions and getting a big win over a team ranked above us."

The Aztecs won all three doubles matches, to claim the doubles point. In number one doubles, San Diego State's Katalina Romero and Katja Karrento improved to 10-4 in the dual season by defeating 32nd-ranked Brooke Beverley and Dominique Reynolds, 8-5.

The Aztecs won four of the six singles matches and claimed victories in the top three positions. In number one, Silvia Tornier, of San Diego State, led Rebecca Pike 2-0 in the first set before Pike retired, giving Tornier her team-best 10th victory of the dual campaign.

Lindsey Hedberg and Karrento recorded straight-set victories for the Aztecs in number two and three singles. Hedberg claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lindsay Ferrell while Karrento was victorious, 6-3, 6-1, over Lu Oswald.

San Diego State's fourth singles point came via Julie Ann Chidley, who claimed her third consecutive victory, a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 decision over Nicole Schneider.

The Aztecs return home to open a three-match homestand on Thursday when San Diego State entertains the highest-ranked team in the Mountain West Conference, 17th-ranked UNLV. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
