Aztecs' Silvia Tornier Named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Silvia Tornier was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending March 19.

A native of Hamburg, Germany, Tornier led the Aztecs to upset victories over 18th-ranked Notre Dame and 41st-ranked Kansas State.

The junior posted a pair of victories over ranked opponents, defeating 63rd-ranked Becky Varnum of Notre Dame, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6), and 111th-ranked Alena Jecminkova of Kansas State, 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles action, Tornier teamed with Indra Erichsen to claim an 8-0 victory in number two doubles against Kansas State.

With consecutive victories over ranked opponents for the first time this season, the San Diego State women's team moved from No. 53 to No. 39 in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Wednesday. The Aztecs, winners of two straight matches, open conference play in Las Vegas on Friday against Utah and on Saturday against Brigham Young.
