Provo, Utah - San Diego State scored seven times in the first inning and ran up a 15-1 lead after five en route to a 17-8 win over Brigham Young at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo Thursday evening. The win improved the Aztecs' season record to 19-9 and upped their league mark to 3-1 as they moved into a tie for second place with the Cougars. With the loss, BYU fell to 9-13-1.
SDSU sent 11 men to the plate in the opening frame, scoring seven runs on six hits and three Brigham Young errors. Reilly Embrey, making his second consecutive start at the DH spot, had a two-run double to spearhead the Aztec uprising. Six of the runs in the inning were unearned as Cougar starter Jeff Mousser (3-2) was touched up for a total of 13 runs in 3.2 innings, but only two were of the earned variety.
Both teams scored once in the third before San Diego State batted around in the fourth inning and added five more to their total. The final runs of the inning came on a two-out two-RBI double by shortstop Taber Lee, who finished his night with three hits (two singles and a double) and three RBIs.
The Aztecs extended their lead to 15-1 with a pair of runs in the fifth as Brian Manfred's double scored Jake McLintock and Chad Corona from second and third respectively. Corona led all Aztec batters with four hits including a pair of doubles, a solo home run and four runs scored. McLintock also contributed two doubles among his three hits and scored three times. The contest was the second straight in which all nine SDSU starters had at least one hit.
Starting pitcher Chris Dunwell notched his fourth straight win to improve his record to 4-2 on the year. The junior from El Cajon went 8.1 innings and struck out seven before giving way to Drew Jenson and Chris Hartshorn who combined to retire the Cougar's final two batters in the ninth.
