San Diego - San Diego State overcame a one-run deficit with 13 runs in the bottom of the fifth and went on to defeat Southern Utah, 19-4, Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The win was the Aztecs' seventh consecutive home victory against no losses this season and upped their record to13-6. The Thunderbirds fell to 1-16.
Trailing 2-1, SDSU sent 18 batters to the plate in the fifth with four of them (Anthony Gwynn, Jake McLintock, Chad Corona and Riley Barrett) collecting two hits apiece. In addition, Taber Lee and Jon Stephens finished the inning with a hit and a walk each. McLintock had three RBIs during the Aztec uprising while Stephens, Barrett and Corona all had a pair.
The Aztecs also batted around once in the seventh when they added five more runs to their total. Doubles by Chad Redfern and Ryan Wilson along with triples by Barrett and Josh Hill highlighted the inning.
Barrett, one of two Aztecs to play all nine innings, completed his afternoon by going 4-for-6 with a pair of triples, four runs batted in and two runs scored. Jake McLintock had three RBIs along with his two hits while five others also had two hits on the day.
Aztec shortstop Taber Lee continued to be a tough out in recent games with a pair of singles and a walk in three plate appearances. The junior from Olympia, Wash., has now reached base safely in his last 11 at bats over SDSU's most recent three contests.
Junior right-hander Rory Shortell, making his fifth start of the season, improved his record to 4-1 on the year. He allowed just two unearned runs on three hits while striking out three over seven innings of work. Thunderbird starter Shane Perkins suffered his fourth defeat in four starts, going 4.1 innings and giving up SDSU's first seven runs.
San Diego State and Southern Utah conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 3) with a contest scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start. That game will pit SDSU junior right-hander Joe Carque (2-0, 2.82) against SUU's James Anderson (1-1, 8.78).
