RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The 16th-ranked San Diego State men's golf team remained undefeated in 2002 as the Aztecs chalked up their third straight victory with a final-round 295 at the USD Invitational Tuesday.
San Diego State, which had four players finish in the top five and posted the lowest team score during all three rounds at the Del Mar Country Club, combined to shoot a 54-hole total of 18-over par 882, 15 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Denver (33-over 897).
"We won despite not playing our best today," said SDSU head coach Dale Walker. "This was a darn tough course and good teams are often measured by what they do when they don't play their best. But three wins is three wins and we are on the right track."
Sophomore Mark Warman, the individual leader after Monday's opening 36 holes, slipped to second and finished with a three-round total of 3-over 219. The Aztecs best final round was turned in by junior Lars Johansson, who used a 71 Tuesday to climb from seventh into a two-way tie for second.
Junior John Lieber closed out the tournament in fourth place with a final score of 6-over 222 with senior Scott Henderson rounding out SDSU's contingent of top-5 finishers in fifth at 7-over 223.
The San Diego State men's golf team returns to action on Monday, March 25th, when the Aztecs hit the links at the Eugene Country Club for the opening two rounds of the Oregon Duck Invitational.
