SAN DIEGO - Some of the nation's fastest hurdlers will be on the San Diego State campus this weekend attempting to qualify for the USA Track and Field Championships. Qualifying heats in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles will be part of the Aztec Track and Field Classic which will be held on Saturday at the Choc Sportsman Oval at the SDSU Sports Deck.
Saturday's competition will serve as a homecoming for former Aztec athletes Miesha McKelvy and Felicia Stone, both will compete in the 100 hurdles on Saturday. McKelvy placed second in the 100 hurdles at the 2002 USA indoor championships and won a bronze medal at the 1998 Goodwill Games. McKelvy holds the SDSU record in the 100-meter hurdles (12.82) and 100-meter dash (11.50). Stone is listed third all-time at SDSU in the 100 hurdles (13.21).
"Miesha McKelvy is on pace to set the American record this weekend," said SDSU head coach Rahn Sheffield, who coach McKelvy in her time as an Aztec. "And she could very well run a world-record time."
Also included in the group are several other nationally recogonized hurdlers. Running alongside McKelvy and Stone in the 100 hurdles will be Kia Davis, who placed fourth in the event at the 2002 USA indoor championships as well as Ellakisha Williamson, currently ranked eighth byTrack and Field News.
Headlining competition in the 400 hurdles is 2001 world championship semifinalist Brenda Taylor, University of Nebraska All-American Meeka Thompson and sixth-ranked Tanisha Mills, from Rice University.
The Aztec Track and Field Classic gets underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Competition in the 100 hurdles is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m., with action in the 400 hurdles getting underway around 3:15 p.m.
