The San Diego State rowing team journeys to the east coast this weekend to compete with two-time ACC champion Virginia on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Rivanna Reservoir. This marks the Aztecs second competition of the spring season and first of the year for Virginia which finished seventh in the team competition at the 2001 NCAA Rowing Championships. SDSU hosted the Parker Cup Regatta last Saturday on Mission Bay, the team won three of the five races it competed in.
Recapping The Parker Cup Regatta
The Aztecs posted wins in the novice four, second novice eight and second varsity eight events on Saturday on Mission Bay. The novice fours handily defeated two UC Irvine boats, racing to a 8:43 first-place time. SDSU won the second novice eight race with a time of 7:33, ahead of UCI (7:48). The Aztecs took the second varsity eight race with a time of 7:28, 14 seconds ahead of second-place Loyola Marymount. Loyola Marymount won the Parker Cup, taking the top spot in the varsity eight (7:13). SDSU placed second (7:25) in the varsity eight and UCI third (7:31).

A Year Ago
SDSU posted second- and third-place finished against Virginia last March at Rivanna Reservoir. The Aztecs finished second in the varisty eight with a time of 7:24 and third in the second varsity eight competition, clocking in at 8:00.

Aztec Coaching Staff
SDSU is led by fifth-year head coach Scott Steckel. Steckel is assisted by Kevin Waldick, who is in his fourth year with the Aztec program and first-year assistant Meredith Johnson. Steckel is a 1994 graduate of San Diego State and has coached the program since 1993 when it was a club sport. Waldick is also an SDSU alum and rowed on the school's men's club team from 1992-96. Johnson is also a graduate of SDSU and was an All-American rower for the Aztecs in 2000.
Looking Ahead
Next Saturday (March 23), SDSU will be in Los Angeles to compete with Southern California. The Aztecs then return to San Diego for the world renouned San Diego Crew Classic on April 6-7 and the San Diego City Championships on April 13. The team is scheduled to compete at the WIRA Championships in May 3-4 and at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships May 17-18.
