MENIFEE LAKES, Calif. - Sandy Kim carded a final-round 75 to sew up her third top-10 finish of the season and three other Aztecs shot 77 Tuesday as the San Diego State women's golf team moved up from seventh to finish sixth with combined 306 during the final round of the Pioneer Electrics Bruin Classic at the Menifee Lakes Country Club.
The Aztecs, who completed the 54-hole tournament with a season-low three-round team score of 915, were four strokes better than No. 16 California during the final round and pushed the Golden Bears to seventh with a final score of 917.
"I'm very happy with our performance over the past two days," said SDSU coach Felicia Brown. "I wish we could have finished a little stronger, but we beat the teams in our region we needed to and were very competitive against a nationally-ranked field. This result should give us something to build on."
No. 20 Pepperdine, the only club to break 300 during all three rounds, captured the team title for the second straight year with a final score of 12-over par 876. No. 17 UCLA took second with a final score of 901, while No. 25 New Mexico and No. 27 Oklahoma tied for third at 908.
Kim once again led the way for the Aztecs, parlaying a 3-over 75 on Tuesday into a sixth-place finish. It is the third top-10 finish of the season for the sophomore, who completed the tournament a 7-over 223. Seniors Heather Rollo and Asa Jankler and sophomore Shayna Miyajima all shot final-round 77s, with Rollo finishing up in 22nd and Jankler taking 26th. Miyajima, who struggled during Monday's opening 36 holes, climbed nine spots Tuesday to finish in 54th.
Katherine Hull of Pepperdine scorched the Menifee Lakes course with a third-round 64 to take medalist honors with a final score of 9-under par 207.
The San Diego State women's golf team returns to action on March 28-29 when the Aztecs travel to Eugene, Ore., for the Nike/Duck Invitational.
