SDSU Women's Golf Team Off To Strong Start At Bruin Classic

March 11, 2002

MENIFEE LAKES, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team got off to a strong start during Monday's opening two rounds of the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classis at the Menifee Lakes Country Club, carding a combined 307 during the morning session and capping the day with a season-low 302 in the afternoon to enter Tuesday's third and final round at 609.

The Aztecs stand in seventh place but are just three strokes behind fourth-place New Mexico (606), two shots back of fifth-place California (607), and one stoke off of sixth place San Francisco (608).

Pepperdine, which won last year's event, again sits a top the leaderboard after completing the opening two rounds with a combined score of 592.

"I'm very pleased with how we played today," said SDSU coach Felicia Brown. "We accomplished a lot of goals during the first two rounds, but we still haven't played to our potential yet."

Sophomore Sandy Kim, tied for seventh after firing back-to-back 74s, leads the Aztecs with a two-round total of 4-over par 148. Senior Heather Rollo, two strokes back of Kim, is tied for 15th at 6-over 150, while senior Asa Jankler is tied for 18th at 7-over 151.

San Diego State's season stroke average leader, sophomore Shayna Miyajima, struggled during both rounds and is tied for 63rd at 16-over 160 after finishing today's action with a pair of 80s.

Catherine Hull and Lindsay Wright of Pepperdine both shot 1-under 143 to lead all individuals.

The final round of the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic tees off from the Menifee Lakes Country Club at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
