FRESNO, Calif. - Despite a two-hour rain delay and cold winds, the Aztecs managed to warm things up late with a 2-1 win over Indiana in a nine-inning battle. The win gives State a 1-0 record in the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic hosted and played at Fresno State.
The game was scoreless for the first five innings as both teams struggled to get things started. The Aztecs scored in the top of the sixth frame with a shot to left field by Tiffany Goudy that sent Kellie Nordhagen home. The Hoosiers responded in the bottom of the inning with a hit to left field sending a runner home.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth when with bases loaded, Danielle Touhey reached first on a error by the Hoosiers pushing Kelcy Murphy home.
The win was given to Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week Bre DeSanta in her second nine-inning complete game in less than a week. The win brings her record to 3-5. Senior Tiffany Goudy went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Sarah Hershman ended a seven-game hitting streak, but was an ace defensively grabbing on a diving catch towards first that she tossed to teammate Summer Ehrsam for the out.
The Aztecs return to action tomorrow with games against Cal Poly and Boston. Game times are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
