SAN DIEGO - San Diego State Executive Director of Athletics and Special Assistant to the President Rick Bay announced Wednesday that the contract of women's basketball coach Barb Smith would not be extended past the current season. The contract, which is a two-year extension from the original three-year deal signed when Smith was hired in 1997, is set to expire on May 1st.
"Barb improved our program in so many areas and I told her she should be proud of the job she has done," Bay said. "Unfortunately, we were not able to enjoy more success on the court."
Smith compiled a 49-86 (.363) overall record, including an 8-20 (.286) mark in Western Athletic Conference play and an 11-31 (.262) record in Mountain West Conference competition, during her five years at the helm of the Aztec women's basketball program.
San Diego State was eliminated from the 2002 Mountain West Conference tournament, 65-52, today by New Mexico, finishing the current campaign at 10-18 (2-12 MWC).
Bay indicated that job opening would be posted through University human resources immediately and that the search for a replacement would ensue following a state-mandated two-week waiting period.
