Tucson - San Diego State dropped its third straight game Saturday afternoon, losing to Arizona, 7-5, in Tucson as UA concluded a sweep of the three-game series with SDSU. The Aztecs' record now stands at 5-4 while the Wildcats improved to 10-1.
Arizona struck for three unearned runs in the first inning off starter Mike Moat, who saw his pitching record drop to 1-1. The sophomore from Colorado allowed a total of six runs (four unearned) on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
However, the Aztec answered back with three of their own in the second inning to tie the game. RBI singles from Jon Stephens and Landon Burt along with a fielder's choice from Taber Lee knotted the score at three.
Not to be outdone, the Wildcats put another three-spot in the board in the bottom of the second to take a 6-3 lead. SDSU came back with a single run in the fourth, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the afternoon. Arizona put a run on the board in the fifth and the Aztecs could only add a consolation run in the final inning on Chad Corona's RBI double that scored Carlo Cota.
Corona led the Aztec offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and a pair of runs scored. Reserve outfielder Landon Burt, getting his first start of the year, responded by going 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Arizona starter Marc Kaiser improved to 2-0 on the season, throwing six innings and allowing seven hits and four runs. Reliever Tony Sulser recorded his second save, pitching the final inning.
San Diego State now has five days off before returning to action on Friday (Feb. 15) when it will host Western Kentucky at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
