Falcons Thwart Aztec Bid For Rare Road Sweep

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) - Air Force senior guard Lamoni Yazzie had 18 points, including three 3-pointers, to help the Falcons earn a 67-54 win over San Diego State Monday in the Mountain West Conference.

Air Force (8-12, 2-5 MWC) led all but 21 seconds and survived a second-half rally by the Aztecs (13-9, 2-5).

Ahead 31-23 at the half, Air Force widened its lead to 45-30 with 12:02 to play. But the Aztecs rallied to make it 45-37 with 6:19 remaining.

Then, after more than six scoreless minutes, Yazzie completed a three-point play, hit a 3-pointer and a field goal on consecutive possessions to put the Falcons up 53-43 with 3:43 left.

Forwards Tom Bellairs and Joel Gerlach added 14 and 12 respectively.

San Diego State leading scorer Randy Holcomb was held to six points.

Mike Mackell led the Aztecs with 17 points. Al Faux added 10.

"(San Diego State) came in here thinking they were going to walk all over us and we jumped on them," Air Force coach Joe Scott said. "Our defense was terrific."
