VALLEJO, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team wasn't able to match its season-low opening-round performances as the Aztecs slipped to fifth place after a final-round 317 Tuesday at the Bay Area Classic. Still, it equaled the best finish of the season for SDSU, which opened the year with a fifth at the Pioneer Intercollegiate back in September.
Shayna Miyajima and Sandy Kim each shot 78 at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course. However, the sophomore duo were the only Aztecs to break 80 during the second and final round as SDSU finished the two-day tournament a 45-over 621.
Co-host California, which had the top four individual finishers, was the only team to break 300 Tuesday and finished the second round with a combined 4-under par 284 to capture the team title at 6-over 582. Opening-day leader Idaho fell to second with a final team score of 598. Denver climbed two spots to take third at 614.
Aztec senior Heather Rollo, third after Monday's first round, shot a final-round 8-over par 80 and finished tied for 16th with Miyajima at 9-over 153. Kim, who carded a two-day total of 13-over 157 placed 29th, while senior Asa Jankler was one shot back in 33rd.
Cal's Anne Walker, the only player to finish the 36-holes below par, took medalist honors with a final score of 3-under 141.
The San Diego State women's golf team returns to action March 11-12 when the Aztecs travel to Menifee Lakes, Calif., for the Pioneer Bruin Classic.
