VALLEJO, Calif. - Senior Heather Rollo fired a 1-over 73 and sophomore Shayna Miyajima finished up at 3-over 75 as the San Diego State women's golf team combined for a season-low round of 304 to close out the opening day of play at the Bay Area Classic in fourth place.
"I am very happy with how we played," said SDSU coach Felicia Brown. "We knew we needed a good result here after getting the spring off to a slow start and the players responded. This is a tough, shot-makers course and 304 is a good result for us."
The Aztecs will head into Tuesday's second and final round just seven strokes behind tournament leader and 34th-ranked Idaho, which played the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course to a combined 297.
Co-hosts California and San Francisco sit in second and third after shooting 298 and 302, respectively.
Among individuals, Rollo is three strokes off the pace set by tournament leader Anne Walker of Cal and will start Tuesday's second round tied for third. Miyajima, the only other Aztecs to finish today's play in the top 20 is ninth.
Senior Asa Jankler shot a 5-over 77, while sophomore Sandy Kim carded a 7-over 79 for SDSU's two other counting scores.
The second and final round of the Bay Area Classic tees off at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
