Feb. 24, 2002

Box Score

Yuma, Ariz. - San Diego State broke open a tight 1-1 ball game with five runs in the bottom of the seventh, and went on to defeat Nevada, 6-1, at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs sent nine men to the plate in the decisive inning and used four hits, an intentional walk and a Wolf Pack error to take an insurmountable lead. San Diego State, which has won five of its last six outings, improved to 10-5 while Nevada fell to 5-7.

Rob Harrand, who pitched the final three innings in relief of starter Joe Carque, picked up his second win of the year against no defeats. He struck out five, walked one and allowed one hit in his three innings of work.

Nevada opened the scoring with a run in the top of the fourth as Catcher Craig Markel doubled home outfielder Chris Dickerson who had drawn a walk and stole second base. SDSU came back with a run in its half of the inning as Jon Stephen's two-out single scored Jake McLintock from second base. McLintock had singled to open the inning and advanced to second on a fielder's choice.

In the seventh, Josh Allen began the Aztec uprising with a single. Taber Lee's sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in a high throw to second by third baseman Mike Gillies, and both runners were safe. After a walk to Anthony Gwynn to load the bases, Rielly Embrey struck out before senior Carlo Cota brought home two runs with a single to left center.

Nevada brought in right-hander Justin Sherman in relief of pitcher James Holcomb, and McLintock greeted him with a run-scoring double to right center as Gwynn scored and Cota reached third. An intentional walk to Chad Corona brought Josh Hill to the plate, and he responded with a two-RBI single up the middle to finish off the scoring

Holcomb (0-1) took to the loss after coming on to start the sixth inning in relief of starter Craig Norris who left with runners on first and third with two outs. Holcomb escaped that jam, but wasn't as lucky in the seventh.

The Aztecs will now have a day off before they play five games over the following six days beginning with a contest at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at 2:00 p.m. That game will not be broadcast on the Internet, but the remainder of the Aztec schedule this season may be heard live at www.goaztecs.com.
