SDSU Men's Tennis Dominates UC Irvine

Feb. 23, 2002

SAN DIEGO - Playing its second match in as many days, the 39th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team defeated 75th-ranked UC Irvine 6-1 on Saturday at SDSU Courts. The match was SDSU's ninth straight against a ranked opponent.

SDSU (4-5) took an early lead with a sweep of the doubles point. The third-ranked Aztecs' pair of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo won at No. 1 doubles (9-8), and the SDSU team's of Felix Hardt and Valentino Pest and Travis Hasson and Gabe Coren at No. 2 (8-4) and No. 3 doubles (9-7), respectively.

The Aztecs only loss in the outing came at No. 3 singles, where UCI's Sean O'Connor defeated SDSU's Valentino Pest. Pest lost the first set 6-4, won the second 6-0 and retired, due to a nagging shoulder injury, with the score 2-1 in his favor in the third set.

Play at No. 5 singles provided excitment. The Aztecs' Travis Hasson defeated the Anteaters' Dontia Haynes, 6-3, 7-6, with Hasson winning the tiebreaker, 9-7.

The Aztecs will now get some rest, with the team next competing on March 3 with a home match against UC Santa Barbara.
