SAN DIEGO - A victory by San Diego State's Katalina Romero in the third set of No. 4 singles helped the 42nd-ranked SDSU women's tennis team clinch a 4-3 victory over UC Irvine on Friday at SDSU Courts.
Romero defeated UCI's Anna Bentzer, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, in the deciding game of the four-hour match and helped to extend the Aztecs' win streak at home to 10 matches.
SDSU (5-2) opened the contest by winning the doubles point, with victories by Katja Karrento and Katalina Romero at No. 2 doubles and Julie Chidley and Indra Erichsen at No. 3 doubles.
UCI evened the score at 1-1, picking up a win at No. 1 singles. SDSU regained the lead with a win by Lindsey Hedberg at No. 2 singles, but a UCI victory at No. 3 singles knotted the contest.
A 6-2, 6-4 win by the Aztecs' Katey Becker at No. 5 singles gave SDSU a 3-2 advantage until the Anteaters' Kristina Boss defeated the Aztecs' Julie Chidley in No. 6 play, setting the stage for Romero's heroics.
SDSU will take some time off from competition to prepare for a busy March schedule, which begins at California on Mar. 1 and continues at Stanford a day later.
