Yuma, Ariz. - The University of Nevada scored three times in the fifth inning and added four more in the sixth to break a 1-1 deadlock and go on to defeat San Diego State, 8-1, Friday night at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Ariz. The loss ended SDSU's three-game win streak and dropped their record to 8-5. The Wolf Pack evened its 2002 ledger at 5-5.
Aztec starter Chris Dunwell (0-2), who had not thrown since Feb. 7 due to last Sunday's rainout with Oregon State, started strong, recording six strikeouts over the first three innings. First baseman Jon Stephens staked San Diego State to a 1-0 lead with his first home run of the season in the bottom of the second.
Nevada tied the contest in the fourth on back-to-back singles by Chris Dickerson and Craig Markel, and a sacrifice fly by Carlos Madrid.
One inning later, Nevada's Mike Gillies was hit by a pitch and teammate Jeff Tolotti followed with a double. A fielder's choice scored Gillies, and Tolotti came home on a single by Josh Laidlaw. The Wolf Pack then loaded the bases with two outs, and Laidlaw scored on a wild pitch.
Nevada scored four times in the sixth inning on a double, hit batter, walk, single and error, then added two more in the top of the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Taylor Pullins.
Nevada starting pitcher Darrell Rasner, meanwhile, was keeping the Aztec offense at bay, allowing only 3 hits after Stephens' one-out homer in the second. The junior breaking-ball specialist finished his night with nine strikeouts over seven innings of work. Two of the five hits he allowed came off the bat of Aztec second baseman Carlo Cota.
