SDSU Track Opens Competition At MWC Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Leslie Miller scored second-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles and 800-meter run en route to a fifth-place finish on Thursday in the pentathlon competition of the 2002 McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Thursday was the opening day of the three-day event which is being held at Cadet Fieldhouse on the Air Force Academy campus.

The pentathlon was the only event held on Thursday, with the rest of the track and field events getting underway on Friday.

Miller, who scored 3,486 points in the event, raced to a time of 8.95 in the 60-meter hurdles and clocked in at 2:25.92 in the 800 meters. She also placed fifth in both the high jump and shot put, with a mark of 1.57 meters (5-01.75) in the high jump and a distance of 11.09 meters (36-04.75) in the shot. Miller placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 4.85 meters (15-11.00).

BYU's Anna-Lee Walcott won the event with a conference-record 3,920 points. That point total surpassed the 3,902 points scored by SDSU's Aja Frary at the 2000 championships.

The championships continue Friday at 1 p.m. MST with finals contested in 10 events and qualifying competition in 12 others. Finals on Saturday begin at 12:30 p.m. MST.
