Aztec Defeat Tritons 3-0 In One-Hitter

Feb. 20, 2002

Box Score

San Diego - Sophomore Mike Moat tossed a one-hitter over eight innings, striking out 14 along the way to lead San Diego State to a 3-0 win over UC San Diego at Tony Gwynn Stadium Wednesday night.

The right-hander from Longmont, Colo., allowed three base runners on a hit, walk and hit batter, but no Triton runner reached second base over the course of the game.

After hitting the second batter in the second inning, Moat retired 14 in a row before conceding a walk to open the seventh. After a strikeout and caught stealing, UCSD designated hitter Jeff Riddle broke up Moat's no-hit bid with a solid single to center.

As good as Moat was, Triton starter John Beaven matched him pitch for pitch over the first half of the game. Beaven retired the first 13 batters he faced before Jon Stephens singled in the fifth. SDSU loaded the bases in that inning on another single by catcher Josh Allen and a walk to Chad Redfern, but Beaven got out of the jam as Taber Lee hit a solid line drive to center that was caught for the third out.

However, the Aztecs were not to be denied in the next inning. A leadoff single by Anthony Gwynn, a walk to Carlo Cota, and a sacrifice bunt from Chad Corona set the table for Josh Hill who lined a single to center to drive in both runners. After a fielder's choice advanced Hill to second, Josh Allen singled up the middle to bring in the third run of the inning.

For Moat, it was the second time this season he has flirted with a no-hitter. In the season-opening series in Hilo, he held Hawaii-Hilo to one hit in a seven-inning complete game victory. In this game, the Aztecs called on reliever Royce Ring to close out the game in the ninth.

Ring, who recorded his third save of the year, proceeded to strike out the side although a passed ball on his first strikeout allowed Triton pinch hitter Mario Mauch to reach first base.

San Diego State now travels to Yuma, Ariz., where it will face Nevada in a three-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 22, at 6:00 p.m. (MST). All three games in Yuma will be broadcast live on the Internet and may be heard at www.goaztecs.com with Friday's game starting at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
