Baseball Wins Doubleheader At Hawaii-Hilo

Hilo, Hawaii - Sophomore right-hander Mike Moat tossed a seven-inning one-hitter as San Diego State defeated Hawaii-Hilo, 9-0, in game one of a doubleheader played at Francis Wong Stadium Saturday afternoon in Hilo. The Aztecs also captured of the twin bill by a score of 7-4. With the win, SDSU improved to 3-1 while the Vulcans fell to 0-13-1.

Moat, making his first start of the season, retired the first 10 batters he faced before giving up a single to Hilo second baseman Daniel Rhodes followed by a walk to center fielder Kaliko Oligo. He then proceeded to retire the final 11 hitters in order to wrap up the victory. Moat struck out four over his seven innings of work.

Brian Manfred, getting his second start of the young season at catcher, picked up where he left off Friday night, going 2-for-2 and driving in three runs. Chad Corona, who had a two-run homer in Friday's win, added two more in game one. His first came in the fifth inning and extended the Aztec lead to 7-0. He added his other two-run shot in the seventh to wrap up the scoring. Corona had a single earlier in the contest and finished with three runs scored.

Hilo starter Robert Shimabuku (0-3) went five innings and gave up seven runs. He was victim of several Vulcan defensive lapses as only three of those runs were earned.

In the nightcap, SDSU took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the second. Leadoff hitter Riley Barrett was hit by a pitch and went to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Hilo pitcher Jeremiah Wolske. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Redfern.

After retiring the side in order in the first two innings, Aztec starting pitcher Joe Carque ran into some trouble in the bottom of the third. A double, walk and two singles allowed Hilo to take a 2-1 lead, and Carque left the game in favor of reliever Daryl Harang.

San Diego State answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by Taber Lee, Carlo Cota, and Garrett Cook plus a sacrifice fly from Corona. Cota finished as SDSU's leading hitter in the contest, going 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs.

Harang (1-0) picked up the win in relief, going four innings and giving up no hits while walking one. Wolske suffered the loss, his second of the season without a win.
