Feb. 18, 2002

Box Score

San Diego - Nine San Diego State pitchers limited the University of Victoria to four hits and struck out 14 as the Aztecs defeated the Canadian squad, 5-2, in an exhibition contest at Tony Gwynn Stadium Monday evening.

SDSU got on the board first with a pair of runs in the opening inning. After a walk to Riley Barrett and a double by Rielly Embrey put runners at second and third, freshman Jake McLintock delivered a two-out double to bring them home.

Victoria came back to tie the game with two runs of its own in the third. Catcher Mike Kittleson walked to open the inning and pinch runner Reid Wilson went to second when a pickoff attempt by pitcher Jeff Teasley got by Embrey at first base. Shane Roberts was awarded first base on a catcher's interference call and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Shawn Miskiman. Wilson then scored on balk and Roberts came home on a wild pitch to tie the score.

The Aztecs regained the lead in the fourth when David Hall led off the inning with a triple to right center and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Despite out-hitting the Canadian team 12-4, the Aztecs were unable to put the game safely away until the bottom of the eighth when Hall's two-out single scored McLintock and Embrey, who had reached on singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Cook.

San Diego State's Chris Dunwell started the game on the mound for the Aztecs, and was one of two SDSU hurlers to strike out the side. Senior Sam Peraza accomplished the same feat in the sixth inning.

Sophomore Daryl Harang, who pitched the fourth, was credited with the win while David Levy earned the save after retiring the side in order in the ninth. Victoria's Mike Chewpoy, who went the distance, took the loss.

The Aztecs return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20, when they host UC San Diego at Tony Gwynn Stadium at 6:00 p.m. That contest can be heard live on the Internet at www.goaztecs.com with Alan Horton calling the action.
