POWAY, Calif. - San Diego State's offense was ignited by a three-run homer in the third by sophomore Kelcy Murphy, the second of the weekend for the third baseman, while the defense was sparked by a triple play in the fifth by shortstop Joann Figueroa to beat the Florida International Golden Panthers, 6-2 at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in Poway. The win gives the Aztecs a 6-6 record.
Scoring for the Aztecs began early with centerfielder Janna Kovesnky reaching third on an error by rightfielder Kelly Nicosia followed by a single by Tiffany Goudy that led Kovensky home. Goudy stole second and scored off a single to centerfield by senior Sarah Hershman.
The play that stunned the crowd came in the fifth. With no outs and bases loaded, Panther Nicole Dubovik lined to Figueroa at short. Figueroa then tagged second and threw to third for a triple play.
Jessi Green was credited with the win, bringing her record to 3-1.
The Aztecs will look to keep the momentum going with a 6 p.m. game tonight against No. 3 Stanford.

The momentum of today's win over Florida International wasn't enough as the Aztecs suffered a 9-0 shutout at the hands of No. 3 Stanford. The loss drops the Aztecs below .500 at 6-7, but State looks to bounce back in tomorrow's matchups against Northwestern at 9:30 a.m. and Pacific at 2:30 at Sportsplex USA in Poway.
Defensively, the Aztecs kept the Cardinal from taking a large lead, giving up two runs in the second and one in the third. But the fourth inning proved to be too much when Stanford scored six runs on six hits.
Sophomore Jeni Tornquist started the game for the Aztecs, but Korin Gregory and Bre DeSanta also spent time in the circle.
