SAN DIEGO (AP) - Randy Holcomb and Mike Mackell scored 15 points each, lifting San Diego State to a 77-73 victory over Brigham Young Monday.
The win came one day after the mother of San Diego State coach Steve Fisher died in Herrin, Ill. Fisher had been with his mother most of last week and was en route to San Diego Sunday night when his mother died.
The Aztecs (14-10, 3-6 Mountain West Conference) rebounded from their worse loss of season, a 70-53 defeat to Utah at home on Saturday, by snapping an eight-game losing streak against BYU.
Holcomb, who also grabbed 10 rebounds, led a balanced attack as Al Faux, Deandre Moore and Tony Bland finished with 13 points each.
Eric Nielsen led Brigham Young (14-8, 4-5) with 14 points and Matt Montague added 12. The Cougars never held the lead and were tied just twice, the last time at 47-47 with 13:43 left in the game.
Faux hit a 3-pointer with 4:51 left to give the Aztecs a 68-59 lead. San Diego State then hit 8-of-12 free throws in the final 1:46 to preserve the lead.
