Bland's Career-High Fuels Aztec Victory

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Junior guard Tony Bland scored 21 of his career-high 33 points in the second half when he teamed with Randy Holcomb to break open a close game, leading San Diego State to a 78-66 win Tuesday against Houston.

Bland and Holcomb scored the Aztecs' first 25 points in the second half. San Diego State (12-8), ahead 34-28 at the half after blowing most of an 18-point lead, went on a 14-5 run in the first five minutes of the second to take a 48-33 lead.

San Diego State, which led by as much as 20 points, never allowed the lead to slip below 10 points.

Bland made 12-of-19 shots, including 7-for-9 in the second half. Holcomb, averaging 18.3 points, was held scoreless in the first half, but finished with 14 points.

Mike Mackell and Deandre Moore each scored 10 points for the Aztecs, who rebounded from two consecutive overtime losses.

Louis Truscott led Houston (11-9) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jeremee McGuire added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Cougars rebounded from a 17-2 deficit in the first five minutes of the game. Houston, down 28-10 at the 8:03 mark, used a 14-0 run to close the margin to make it a game at halftime.
