San Diego State junior Oliver Maiberger and sophomore Ryan Redondo both claimed singles matches and combined to win their doubles match as the 53rd-ranked Aztecs opened their 2002 spring schedule with a 6-1 victory over 63rd-ranked New Mexico on Friday at the ITA Region VII Team Championship in Boise, Idaho.
The Aztecs will face the winner of tonight's match between Boise State and Brigham Young on Saturday, for the right to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Feb. 7-9 in Louisville, Ky.
San Diego State took a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. Maiberger and Redondo, ranked second nationally, won at number one doubles, 8-4. Felix Hardt and Travis Hasson paired up to record an 8-4 victory at number two doubles.
The Aztecs took four of five singles matches from the Lobos. Maibger, ranked 13th nationally in singles, rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Divan Coetzee of New Mexico, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Felix Hardt, Travis Hasson, Gabe Coren and Redondo also claimed singles victories for the Aztecs.
San Diego State, which has won nine consecutive regular-season matches, will play the winner of the Broncos-Cougars match tomorrow at 1 p.m. PST.
