SAN DIEGO STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Colorado State at San Diego State
Saturday, January 19, 2002
Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl/San Diego, Calif.
SAN DIEGO STATE HEAD COACH STEVE FISHER
On The Game:
"I thought Tony's technical foul sort of set the tone for the second half. His defense became better. Our defense as a team in the second half was better, although I don't really think it was that bad in the first half. This was a good win. It was one that we needed to have. We needed to defend our home court."
On Mike Mackell:
"We kept telling Mike he was as good as any big man that he would play. I think he lost some confidence early on. I'm not surprised he's playing better now. To be honest with you, I was surprised he didn't play better sooner."
On Big Monday:
"From what I have seen of Wyoming they are big and powerful inside and the guards they have now are doing a good job. I saw them on tape against Colorado State and I was impressed."
SAN DIEGO STATE PLAYERS
Junior Center Mike Mackell
On His Improved Play:
"People were saying that it was going to be half way through the season before I got it going. I didn't get off to a good start at the beginning of the season and that hurt my confidence. I decided that it was time to start getting aggressive and give it my all. I have been doing that the last three games."
Senior Guard Al Faux
On Mike Mackell And His Recent Turnaround:
"Before conference we sat down and decided to forget about preseason, to clean the slate and come in with a fresh start. I think that is what (Mike) did and he has been playing better ever since. He forgot about his slump and has been focusing on the conference."
On Preparing For Wyoming:
"It is going to be a tough one, but if we come and play them tough and don't let them beat us on the glass and defend like we did like we did in the second half tonight, then we can win that game."
COLORADO STATE HEAD COACH DALE LAYER
General Remarks:
"We got tired in the second half. We gave it a huge effort but we lost three starters since Thursday morning. San Diego State is an extremely talented team that made a lot of big shots tonight. We thought that we had contained Randy Holcomb, but he still scored 18 points and seven rebounds. We are worn down and it is hard to find fresh guys with a limited bench."
