Baseball Wins Opener In Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia - Starter Chris Dunwell and reliever Daryl Harang combined to scatter six hits and strike out 11 in San Diego State's 5-0 win over the Victoria Aces in the first contest of the four-game series against the Australians in Melbourne. With the win, the Aztec improved to 6-1 on their 10-game preseason tour.

Dunwell, who threw five innings, struck out seven to pick up the win. His only rough spot came in the second inning when he load the bases on a single and two walks, but retired the side without any damage. Harang threw the final four innings, giving up a pair of hits and striking out four to pick up the save.

SDSU's offense collected a total of seven hits, but it was the generosity of the home side that allowed the Aztecs to score their runs. Victoria starter Matthew Wilkinson, recently signed by the Indians, opened the game with four straight walks, allowing San Diego State to take a first-inning lead for the sixth time in seven contests. An RBI single by Chad Corona and fielder's choice from Jacob Minter staked the Aztecs to a 3-0 after one inning.

The Aztec's other two runs came in the fourth, and were scored without the benefit of a hit. An error by Ace shortstop Ben Utting allowed Jake McLintock to reach safely. He was retired on a fielder's choice by Anthony Gwynn, and Carlo Cota followed with a walk. A double steal by Gwynn and Cota was followed by a throwing error by Utting on a ground ball by Taber Lee, allowing both runners to score.

San Diego State and Victoria are slated for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Altona Stadium in Melbourne beginning at 3:00 p.m. Both ends of the twin bill will be broadcast live on the internet beginning at 8:00 p.m. Friday night (Jan. 18) in San Diego.
