Baseball Continues Winning Ways On Preseason Tour

Jan. 17, 2002

Box Score

Gold Coast, Australia - San Diego State got two doubles each from Chad Corona and Carlo Cota that helped account for all four runs in a 4-1 win over the Queensland Rams Thursday night at the Palm Meadows facility in Gold Coast Australia. With the win, SDSU runs its record to 5-1 and completes the first leg of its preseason tour down under.

Once again the Aztecs got on the board in the first inning to take a lead they would not relinquish. A single by Anthony Gwynn and the first of two doubles by Cota put two runners on with no out. Queensland starter Phil Stockman then recorded back-to-back strikeouts to seemingly get out the jam before Corona's first two-bagger of the night drove in the runners.

SDSU added to its lead in the third when Gwynn opened the inning with a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error by Rams third baseman Ben Foster. Cota then stepped up and drove a double down the right field line to score Gwynn. SDSU's final run came in the sixth when Corona opened the inning with a double, advanced on a bunt single by Josh Allen, and scored on a ground out double play by Garret Cook.

The Aztecs received another excellent performance from the pitching staff, this time led by sophomore Mike Moat. In his first appearance of the tour, Moat went 5.2 innings, allowing one run on a pair of hits while striking out four to pick up the win. Erik Fiedler (three K's in 1.1 innings) and David Levy (three K's in 2.0 innings) held Queensland hitless the rest of the way with Levy picking up the team's first save in Australia.

The Aztecs are scheduled to fly out from Brisbane to Melbourne early Friday morning and begin a four-game series with the Victoria state team that night at 7:00 p.m. The first game of that series can be heard live on the internet beginning at 12:00 a.m. Friday (Jan. 18) in San Diego.
