Aztec Athletics Center Open House Set For February

Jan. 16, 2002

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State alumni, friends and fans can enjoy a day of competitions and get their first look at the newly-constructed Aztec Athletics Center on Saturday, Feb. 9, when the Department of Athletics hosts an open house on the SDSU campus.

Along with the open house, the women's softball team, and the men's and women's basketball teams will all be in action on The Mesa. The always-popular Aztec Insider will also be held at Cox Arena.

The day begins at 9 a.m. when the softball team hosts Missouri. Kathy Van Wyk's squad, coming off an appearance in the NCAA regional final last spring, will also be in action at 2 p.m. against Hawaii.

At noon, the Aztec Athletics Center will open its doors for tours and an open house. It will give fans their first look at the four-story, 130,000-square foot facility that now houses every varsity sport. The new building includes the Wise Foundation Hall of Fame, a new 14,000-square foot weight room, auditorium, new locker rooms and a new computer lab and academic center.

The Aztec Insider features program updates from head football coach Tom Craft, head basketball coach Steve Fisher, women's head basketball coach Barb Smith and executive director of athletics Rick Bay. The annual event takes place from 1 to 2 p.m. at Cox Arena. The arena doors will open at 12:30 p.m. with concessions available.

The Aztec Insider is open to all fans holding tickets to the men's basketball game, which begins at 3 p.m. That contest, against the University of Utah, could draw the biggest crowd of the year to Cox Arena and the fans are urged to purchase tickets early. The men's game will be followed by a 5:30 p.m. women's game featuring the Aztecs against UNLV in a Mountain West Conference battle.

Tickets are available at window G of Qualcomm Stadium, goaztecs.com, at any Ticketmaster location, or at ticketmaster.com. For additional information, contact the Aztec ticket office at 619-283-SDSU.
