Brisbane, Australia - The San Diego State offense, held to three hits by Queensland pitching Monday evening, exploded for 19 hits in an 18-2 win over the Rams Tuesday night in a game played at the Windsor Baseball Club in Brisbane, Australia. The game was halted after eight innings by mutual consent of the coaches.
For the fourth time in five contests, the Aztecs scored in the opening inning, this time getting a pair of runs on RBIs by Taber Lee and Jon Stephens. SDSU added to its lead in the second as Carlo Cota singled home Riley Barrett, who had doubled with two outs.
Queensland shaved that lead to a single run with two in the second off Aztec starter Joe Carque. However, it was as close as they would come, managing only three more hits over the final five innings. Carque, making his first appearance of the tour, picked up the win, going four innings and striking out six. Soph Drew Jenson and freshman Daniel Bruckart threw two innings apiece, and each recorded three strikeouts.
After picking up three runs in the fifth to take a 6-2lead, San Diego State sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 times in the sixth inning to put the result beyond doubt. The outburst was capped by a grand slam home run off the bat of outfielder Chad Redfern. Catcher Brian Manfred and outfielder Anthony Gwynn each had a pair of hits and scored twice in the inning.
It was an outstanding night for the Aztec offense, which saw every starter tally at least one hit. The Aztecs were led at the plate by Stephens (3-for-4, double, 3 RBI, 3 runs) and Gwynn (3-for-3, triple, 3 runs, 1 RBI).
San Diego State will face the Queensland team for the final time Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Palm Meadows facility in Gold Coast. The game will be broadcast live on the internet beginning at 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning in San Diego.
The Aztecs will have an off day on Thursday, then depart Brisbane for Melbourne early Friday. While in Melbourne, they will play a four-game series against the Victoria state team beginning Friday night.
