Box Score

Brisbane, Australia - San Diego State showed some pitching and some power as it notched a pair of victories in a split doubleheader Sunday evening. In a pair of seven-inning contests played at the Windsor Baseball Club's Stan Holloway Field in Brisbane, the Aztecs defeated Queensland, 5-1, and the Brisbane All-Stars, 13-2.

In game one, junior right-hander Rory Shortell picked up where he left off at the end of last season, going six strong innings to pick up the win. He scattered three hits and struck out six while giving up one earned run. Senior Erik Fielder closed out the game with a perfect seventh inning to wrap up the win.

Offensively, the Aztecs opened with a pair of runs in the third inning. Catcher Josh Allen singled, and advanced to third base after a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt by Garrett Changnon. Taber Lee, continuing his hot hitting, scored Allen with an RBI double, then scored himself on an infield single by Anthony Gwynn and throwing error by Queensland second baseman Adam Wardrop.

SDSU doubled its advantage in the fifth, scoring a pair of runs. Lee and Gwynn opened the frame with singles, then scored on a grounder by Garrett Cook and sacrifice fly by Rielly Embrey.

The Australians got on the board in the sixth when first baseman Mitch Evans singled home Andrew Buckley, who had opened the inning with a walk.

The Aztecs' final run came the next inning as a sacrifice fly by Landon Burt brought home Cook, who had led off with a single, advanced on a hit by Embrey, and was successfully bunted to third by Chad Redfern.

Sunday's second game was played against the Brisbane All-Stars, a collection of players from the local 10-team league that plays two or three times a week. It didn't take long for the Aztecs to assert themselves, scoring an unearned run in the first and four more in the second.

Newcomer Riley Barrett, who got the start at shortstop, was one of three Aztecs to hit homers in the game. The junior from Red Deer, Alberta, went 3-for-5 with a two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Third baseman Chad Corona hit a three-run homer in the fourth, his second long ball in two games, and first baseman Jon Stephens added a three-run shot in the sixth.

SDSU's pitching proved too much for the local side as well. Junior Rob Harrand was perfect in three innings of work, striking out five. Soph Drew Jenson also recorded five strikeouts over his two innings of work.

Brisbane was able to touch up Aztec pitching for a pair of runs (one earned) in the sixth when it put together a pair of hits and were aided by an Aztec throwing error.

Baseball action in Australia continues Monday evening when the Aztecs face the Queensland squad at the Palm Meadows complex at 7:00 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on the internet beginning at 1:00 a.m. Monday morning Pacific time.
