Dec. 3, 2001

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After leading the San Diego State men's basketball team to victories over UC San Diego and Cal State Northridge last week, Aztec guard Tony Bland has been named the Mountain West Conference's men's basketball player of the week, the league office announced Monday. The occasion is the first of his career.

The 6-5 junior averaged 21.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and five assists in the two games last week. He connected on 14-of-22 (63.6 percent) shots from the field, 11-of-12 (91.7 percent) attempts from the free throw line and 3-of-5 (60 percent) from the three-point arc.

Against UCSD, Bland scored a team-high 20 points in just 22 minutes of play, connecting on 7-of-9 field goals, 6-of-6 free throws and dishing out eight assists. He tallied a team high 22 points and four rebounds in the win over Cal State Northridge. He was 7-of-13 from the floor, including 4-for-6 in the second half versus the Matadors and hit 3-of-5 treys and 5-of-6 free throws.

Bland currently leads the league in scoring at 22.7 points a game and has scored 20 or more points in a conference record six straight games. The six-game scoring streak is also the longest at SDSU since the 1985-86 campaign.

SDSU (4-2) meets crosstown rival San Diego (2-3) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
