Craft Names First Two Assistant Coaches

Dec. 12, 2001

San Diego - San Diego State head football coach Tom Craft took the first step towards completing his new staff on Wednesday by announcing the retention of current Aztec assistant coaches Damon Baldwin and Charlie Camp. Both coaches will keep their 2000 responsibilities. Baldwin will remain as offensive line coach and Camp will continue his duties as linebackers coach.

"Damon is a former San Diego State player and has done a fine job coaching the offensive line the past few years," said Craft, who was named head coach on Dec. 6th. "He has also done an outstanding job as a recruiter as I can attest from being at Palomar. It is a perfect fit."

Baldwin has been with the Aztec program for the last four years as a full-time assistant, having produced first-team All-American Mike Malano and nine all-conference linemen during his tenure on The Mesa. Two of his 2000 players, David Moreno and Chester Pitts, were honored as all-league players by the Mountain West. Baldwin graduated from SDSU in 1990 after playing on the offensive line from 1985 to 1989.

Camp has spent the past two seasons in charge of the Aztec linebackers and saw three of his charges (Jomar Butler, Kirk Morrison and Dylan Robles) named to the all-Mountain West Conference honorable mention squad in 2001. Camp is a 1996 graduate of the University of Arizona where he was a standout linebacker on the Wildcats' "Desert Swarm" defense from 1991-95. He came to SDSU from Idaho.

"Charlie Camp has a great presence on the field and as a recruiter," Craft said. "I think with his inroads in New Orleans, and with the popularity of Marshall Faulk nationally, and with the popularity of La'Roi Glover and Kyle Turley (both former Aztecs) in New Orleans, there is a San Diego State presence. We can make an impact there and Charlie is a native of New Orleans who can make an impact in the city."
