Las Vegas, NV - The fourth seeded Utah Utes defeated fifth-seed San Diego State, 3-0, today in the first quarterfinal match of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the Campus of UNLV.
Utah took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when sophomore forward Missy Dennis converted a penalty kick. The Utes tacked on a second goal at the 82:51 mark when senior forward Amy Kofoed pushed the ball past San Diego State's goalkeeper Linnea Quinones.
Kofoed added one more goal in the 89th minute, this time beating San Diego State's replacement keeper Erin Haentjens, who had come on for the game's final three minutes.
The Utes outshot the Aztecs 19-15 on the day, but recorded 12 shots on goal compared to SDSU's 5. Quinones finished the game with nine saves while Utah's Lynnsey Asay had five.
Utah will make its second straight MWC semifinal appearance when it faces the first seeded Cougars from Brigham Young University, Thursday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m.
The Aztecs, meanwhile, conclude their 2001 campaign with an overall record of 6-11-1.
